You are everything I wanted. But nothing I needed.

And we would stare at the world unfolding from our perfect place, and smile. Because we were too far away, this wasn’t our world. Our universe was on Facebook albums, one line statuses quoted off songs we memorized from the club, the choice between Mcdonalds and KFC and television shows (the ones which came before the news).  We never saw the world collapsing around our feet, the ashes settling in our hair. We never heard the cries of the desperate and the pleas of the lost. We never looked beyond our black box. We never thought to think, or tried to try. We fought our inner battles while the apocalypse raged beyond.  And when we finally looked out of the window, all we saw was the remains of what had been a world. All we could do was watch, as we sunk into the remains and realized that what goes around…must come around.

Today, I am moving on. 

I am bottling up the past, sealing shut the memories, forgetting the way your name sounds when uttered in my head. I remember the time we first met. The tentative brush of our eyes, how you asked me if I was feeling nervous and I nodded. And how we would remember this moment. The nervous first step. How I would remember this moment, as I would remember you. I am shutting that out too. 

Because in tug of war when you are the only one pulling at the rope, you would rather let go than have it come away with your hands.
